Tanzania Agreements

The overall goal of the Tanzania Agreements at government level is to enhance the quality of higher education and research in Tanzania in order to contribute to poverty reduction in the country.

The Tanzania Agreement consists of two separate agreements, one between the Royal Norwegian Embassy (RNE) in Dar es Salaam and SIU for the 2006-2010 period. The other agreement is between Norad and SIU for the 2009-2012 period. The first agreement regulates SIU’s assistance to the embassy in the administrative and technical follow-up of the support to Tanzanian higher education institutions. The latter agreement with Norad concerns SIU's administrative responsibility for the PITRO III programme.

Higher education and research in Tanzania are also supported through other programmes such as the NUFU programme, the Natural Resources Management programme and the NOMA programme.

Support is given to the development and running of academic programmes, staff development, infrastructure and the administration of the institutions. The agreement covers important academic fields for poverty reduction such as agriculture and resource management, economic development and good governance. The main activities are knowledge production and management, dissemination of research findings and capacity building.

Who may apply?

At the moment there is no available funding opportunity for new projects. The last call for proposals was in 2010. Information about future calls of proposals will be available on this site.

Participants

Currently only two institutions of higher education are supported through the agreement, namely the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). Several decades of development support to Mzumbe University (MU) concluded in 2009. The total annual support for these institutions is NOK 30 million annually.

The two Tanzanian institutions each have a Norwegian partner institution. These are the University of Oslo (UiO) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) respectively.
