Supplementary tuition grants

Supplementary tuition grants

The Supplementary Student Grant Scheme covers fees charged for certain high-quality courses of study in other countries, when these are higher than the normal levels of fee payment grants.

On behalf of the Ministry of Research and Education (KD), SIU suggests how the list of quality institutions approved for the Supplementary Student Grant Scheme should be updated. The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund deals with all applications for these grants.

Allocation of grants

The Educational Loan Fund's ordinary rates for payment of fees are applicable for countries and institutions that charge fees.

Course requirements

A criterion for qualifying for the supplementary grant scheme is that the course in question can be recognised as being equivalent in standard to a higher education course in Norway.

For the supplementary student grant KD has set out the following criteria:

  • Supplementary grants will be awarded to Norwegian students who are taking particularly high-quality courses of study abroad
  • The scheme is particularly aimed at master's-level courses, but bachelor's and PhD courses can also be covered
  • The Supplementary Student Grant Scheme is available on the same conditions to students taking degrees and individual courses
  • Supplementary grants are only available for specifically named institutions and courses

Applications for supplementary grants

The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund deals with applications for supplementary student grants and for their payment. Application forms and information about the application procedure can be found on the Loan Fund's web-site (in Norwegian).
