Application

All application must include an extensive and specific description of your project on about one page's length, where you give an account of theme, problem for discussion, use of sources and give reasons for why a stay in Norway is relevant.

The applicant must also provide details of a tutor in Norway who has agreed to tutor you during your stay in Norway. Work in Norway shall be carried out under the auspices of a university department or other relevant institution, which accepts responsibility for the visit and appoints a tutor to assist with professional and practical issues.

Application – step by step

Step 1: Application

Application for semester grant must be submitted online in Espresso. It is important to read the guidelines before filling out the application form. The guidelines are found at the bottom of this page. The applicant must provide details of a tutor in Norway who has agreed to tutor you during your stay in Norway. Work in Norway shall be carried out under the auspices of a university department or other relevant institution, which accepts responsibility for the visit and appoints a tutor to assist with professional and practical issues.

You must also fill in the name and contact information of your tutor at your home institution. It is important that you write the correct e-mail address of your home institution tutor, as he or she uses this address to get access to submit a recommendation of your application.

Step 2: Tutor's recommendation

After the application deadline, the contact person in the country of origin will be asked to evaluate/recommend and, if appropriate, rank applicants from that institution. An application without such a recommendation will not be assessed. The tutor’s recommendation must be submitted online in Espresso.

Step 3: Assessment

The application for semester grant is assessed by the Advisory Council. SIU sends their decision letters by e-mail to all applicants.

Step 4: Accepting the grant

Applicants who have been awarded semester grants must accept the grant by returning a signed form to SIU. The signed acceptance form must be sent to SIU by e-mail or ordinary mail within the deadline set by SIU.

Step 5: Accommodation

SIU does not assist in finding accommodation during your stay in Norway, but we guarantee for deposit for students who find accommodation through the Student Welfare Organisation (Studentsamskipnaden).
SIU recommends that you immediately contact the Student Welfare Organisation at your institution in Norway for information about application regulations and deadlines. Please note that separate regulations may apply for PhD. students.

Step 6: Practical matters

Before arriving, you should contact the international students' office at the institution where you will be studying, so they may assist you in practical matters.

Step 7: Residence permit and insurance

Three months is the maximum period of which you can stay in Norway without a residence permit. If you wish to study in Norway for longer than three months you must apply for a residence permit for students. For more information, please see UDI's webpage. Students who need a visa for visiting Norway, must apply for visa at the Norwegian Embassy in their home country before traveling to Norway.

Step 8: Disbursement of the grant

The grant is sent as a postal giro to your institution in Norway and may be picked up upon arrival. The money can be drawn at any post office in Norway. SIU recommends that you bring some extra money for the first days in Norway.
