Semester Grants
On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Research, SIU each semester give grants to students at European universities studying a Norwegian subject. The semester grant gives the students an opportunity for a fieldwork of between one and three months stay at an institution of higher learning in Norway.
The semester grant may be used for work within Norway in connection with dissertations for Bachelor or Master degree, or for doctorates in a Norwegian subject.
The semester grants are awarded for a minimum of one and a maximum of three months within the Norwegian semester periods. The timing of the applicant's stay in Norway must be agreed by the applicant and the tutor in Norway in co-operation.
The size of the grant
The grant is NOK 9,080 per month. Applicants studying at locations outside Oslo will also receive a travel grant. The travel grant in NOK 1,000 for stays in southern Norway (south of Trondheim) and NOK 1,500 for stays in northern Norway (north of Trondheim). The grant covers accomodation, board, local transport, any tuition fees, study materials, pocket money and similar. Grants for travel to and from Norway are not awarded.
Who are eligible for applying?
Semester grants are primarly awarded to students at European universities with departments for Nordic or Scandinavian studies who have chosen a Norwegian topic for their Bachelor/Master/PhD degrees. The grant may also be awarded to younger Norwegian teachers overseas or candidates wishing to take exams to qualify them to teach Norwegian as a foreign language.
Application deadline
There are two annual application deadlines:
- 15th of March - tutor must submit recommendation by 1st of April
- 15th of October - tutor must submit recommendation by 1st of November
