Norwegian universities contribute to capacity building in developing countries
In 2009, 1 500 students in developing countries were active in cooperation programmes with Norwegian higher education institutions.
A substantial number of master’s programmes and PhD courses in important areas such as environment, energy and resource management have also been developed with support from Norwegian institutions.
260 PhD students and well over 1 200 Master’s students participate in the 140 projects where Norwegian institutions of higher education collaborate with partner institutions in the South.
Thematically, the research and education projects span a wide range of important areas, such as environment, health, energy and natural resource management, good governance and democratic development.
Three programmes for cooperation in higher education funded by Norad aim at developing courses and study programmes at institutions in developing countries. The goal is to increase the local capacity to educate a qualified workforce for government administration and academia.
NOK 152 million was allocated to the programmes in 2009.
The three cooperation programmes funded by Norad are The Norwegian Programme for Development, Research and Education (NUFU), Norad’s Programme for Master Studies (NOMA) and the Norad Programme in Arts and Cultural Education (ACE). The Programmes are administrated by The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU).
